Frequently Asked Questions

What if I apply and don't get accepted?
If you apply and don't get accepted, we can still support you with self-employment by using our select services. Upon registering you will be able to access and apply for local jobs.

I currently work for an agency, can I work privately too?
The short answer is yes, however you would need to check your individual contract with the agency as some agencys prevent staff from undertaking private work.

What wage will I be earning?
As a self-employed carer you are in control of your hourly rate and the hours you work.

Certain factors need to be taken into consideration such as experience, complexity of care tasks, location, weekend/unsociable hourly rates, charging mileage, business overheads.

Typically self-employed carers in the south east charge between £15 - £23 per hour.
With the average care required for a person being 21 hours per week (3 hours per day x 7 days) you could anticipate £315- £483 per week for one client.

Taking on multiple clients, working 6 hours per day could easily see this figure double to £630 - £966 per week.

Can I still become a member if I can only work during school hours?
Flexibility is one of the key benefits of self-employment. The majority of the care workforce are parents. The ability to pick and choose the hours you work is one of the main reasons people become self employed.

Eg:  Carer drops off her children to school at 08:40, drives 10 minutes to get to her client and starts work at 08:50 for 1-2 hours depending if her client is having a good or bad day. She goes home for lunch and undertakes her own household tasks, she then goes back to the same client for 13:30 to prepare lunch and have a chat, at 14:30 she leaves for school to pick up her children.

I have reached retirement age, can I still be a self-employed carer?
Of course you can, many carers have reached retirement age and choose to add value to their local community by assisting others, be it helping their neighbours by sitting in with them for a social call, undertaking shopping tasks, or sharing their life experiences with someone younger than they are.

I want to be a carer to supplement my income?
There are many part time and odd hour roles required for undertaking caring tasks, anything from taking a local boy to play snooker, socialising and undertaking unsociable hour calls, to collecting and delivering shopping. There is no reason why you are unable to supplement your income by being a carer part time.

It would be more apt however to look at using the select service for your support such as insurance and DBS checks.
